Consensual Divorce Therapy: Exploring Effectiveness
Chun Young-Ju

Abstract
The approach to consensual divorce therapy used in this study was based on information derived from the research literature and from consultations with 13 family therapy professionals. The researchers studied 2 cases, each involving 4 sessions of therapy. Both couples had minor children, and both had recently filed for consensual divorce. The first 2 sessions focused on ¡°reasonable decision-making regarding the divorce,¡± and the last 2 on either ¡°recovery of marital function¡± or ¡°cooperative parenting,¡± depending on the couple¡¯s decision on divorce. Common factors of change and factors of effectiveness were analyzed based on the transcription, therapist¡¯s observation, and a questionnaire collected from the clients. Results of the analysis showed several factors facilitating change. These conclusions were bolstered by the fact that both couples cancelled their respective divorces, reporting improvement in subjective wellbeing, understanding of self, recognizing responsibility for the marital problem, and accepting responsibility as parents. Partial improvements in marital communication and in sensitivity to their children¡¯s welfare were also noted. The authors conclude with a discussion of various issues related to providing divorce therapy.
